There are faster ways to blog than logging into your WordPress Dashboard everytime you want to make a post. By enabling xml-rpc in the writing settings of your WordPress blog, you’re able to use any desktop client to blog from your Mac or PC. This article explores the various Mac and Windows software apps that enable you to blog from the desktop after xmlrpc is turned on.
Using Xmlrpc to Blog from the Desktop
Here are what I believe to be the best desktop blogging software using xmlprc for both Mac and Windows:
Mac Xmlrpc WordPress Blogging Software
- Macjournal – Macjournal allows you to publish across multiple blogs all from its dashboard, including LiveJournal and Tumblr blogs. You’ll get a traditional “journal” look that features a nice calendar view.
You can add photos to your entries, and after you enter the ftp details for your blog, the photos will be automatically uploaded to the proper folder once you publish your post. Macjournal is $40 and is available from https://www.marinersoftware.com/products/macjournal/.
- MarsEdit – Marsedit feels like a more grown up version of Macjournal. Whereas Macjournal gives you the feel of a diary, Marsedit feels like a streamlined tool designed for power users. HTML editing and iPhoto integration make it easy to get your posts looking how you want them. One note about scheduling future posts with Marsedit: You can “schedule” posts by simply setting the date of the post to the future before publishing it (go to Post -> Edit Date from the menu bar, and set it to the date and time you want the post to go live). WordPress will treat future dated posts as unpublished, and then automatically change them to published when the future date finally arrives. This also works on Blogger blogs, but not Typepad or Tumblr.
Marsedit is $40 and is available from http://www.red-sweater.com/marsedit/.
Windows Xmlrpc WordPress Blogging Software
Windows Live Journal. There’s really nothing close on the Windows platform, although I’d love to hear other people’s opinions in the comments. The blogging platform can be extended via plugins, and best of all it’s free.
Mac and Windows Xmlrpc WordPress Blogging Software
WP Blog Poster, from WPBlogposter.com. This desktop WordPress posting software allows you to upload a folder of files to any of your drop down list of blogs. You can either have the software choose the filename as the title of the post or use the first line of the text file as the post titles. The files need to be *.txt files, but they can include html. Two interesting features of this software include:
- Accepts articles in spinnable text and will post a random spun version of that article. This is an especially nifty feature if you have syndication blogs that you don’t want to have exactly the same content. For example, if you have 5 entertainment blogs, you could post the same movie press release to all 5 of them but feature a different actor or actress’ picture in each release by spinning the <img photo tag.
- You can change things in the final screen before posting. Only when you start using this program will you see how helpful this feature is. You can make little tweaks like changing the post category, changing the date and tweaking the title in a very simple manner. This will save you invaluable time as it’s often easier to make these changes in the finalization screen than starting the whole posting session over again.
It’s probably best to show you a video of WP Blog Poster in action so you can see what I mean. I use both the Mac and Windows versions, and they both look and function identically on either platform.
